This week, I counted shootings in each region.
Since the dataset contains a state column but no region, I used R to classify the states into Northeast, Midwest, South, and West, then mapped each state to its region:
I displayed the first 10 entries in this list as follows:
Then, I exported to an Excel file to further calculate the total number of shootings in the areas by year and created a line chart. As we can see, the South took first place but perhaps because this region has most states.
Here are the year-over-year percentage changes in police shootings across U.S. Census regions:
- Midwest: Large fluctuations, with a 28.3% increase in 2021 and a 9.8% drop in 2018.
- Northeast: Noticeable rise in 2016, 2021, and 2023 with 7.3%, 18.5% and 20.3% accordingly, but declines in other years.
- South: Mostly stable, but a 12.6% increase in 2019 and a 7.5% drop in 2024.
- West: Experienced a 13.4% increase in 2020 but also had declines in 2019 and 2021.
